From the Health Room
PLEASE don't send your child to school when he or she is feeling ill! According to The Parent & Student Handbook (page 28): “Children experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, or a temperature over 100.4 need to remain home for 24 hours after the last occurrence. Please do not mask a fever with Tylenol or Motrin and send your child to school.”
As flu season approaches, it becomes even more imperative that we help reduce the spread of illness. Sending an ill child to school for several hours to maintain "perfect attendance" (with the understanding that your child may then go home) sends the wrong message to our children about disease prevention and consideration for others.
Book Fair
The Fall Book Fair needs your help! The HDS Library will be transformed into a shopping paradise for book lovers of all ages on Wednesday, December 3 through Friday, December 5. The Book Fair committee is looking for volunteers who can help with sales during the day and with breakdown Friday afternoon. Here is the schedule of where help is still needed:
Wednesday, December 3: 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, December 4: 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Friday, December 5: 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; and 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. (Break Down)
As you can see, shifts are typically around three hours long, which gives you plenty of time to do some shopping while you work! If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail Julie Morgan. You will be contacted in the next week to schedule your shift.
Thank you in advance for helping to make the Fall Book Fair a success.
Retake Picture Day - Thursday, November 13
On Thursday, November 13, Classic Photography will provide HDS with a "Retake Picture Day" for students who where absent or who want a retake. If your child needs to have his or her picture retaken, please return the picture package you want re-done. If the student was absent, come to the office for a Picture form.
SAVE THE DATE - Sixth Annual HDS Blood Drive - January 14
We need your blood. The HDS Blood Drive is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, 2009 from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Room. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the Library windows soon after Thanksgiving. We will have 15-minute time slots. Please allow 1 hour and 30 minutes for your donation. If you are a regular donor, you have to wait 56 days between donations (not eligible if you have donated after November 20). We need 40 useable pints to meet our goal (we did not meet our goal last year). As such, we need 50 people to sign up. Friends and general public are welcome. Be the first to sign up and get the time that you need.
National French Week - November 18 ñ 20
Once again we will be celebrating National French Week with Middle School students presenting projects to the Lower School students. Sixth and eighth grade students will have a French lunch that week (sixth on November 18 and eighth on November 20). We will also be selling chocolate-filled Advent calendars, crêpes, and other goodies during recess and lunch.
Arts Festival Thanks!
On behalf of the Advancement Office and the entire Arts Festival Committee, I'd like to thank the HDS community and their guests for the tremendous support of last weekend's Arts Festival. The show was a huge success, breaking all records for attendance at both the Preview Party and public show. I am fully confident that the show earned a sizeable amount towards the School's endowment. A great time was had by all, including the artists, restaurants, entertainers, and, of course, the show attendees! Thanks to all! Susie Oursler, Arts Festival Chairman

Thanksgiving Food Collection
As is our tradition, we again ask HDS students and their families to help provide food for those in need at Thanksgiving time. Manna House, operated by the Bel Air United Methodist Church, will distribute our donated food to its patrons. A Thanksgiving dinner, including breads baked by our 8th grade, will be served at Manna House, and guests will be sent home with a bag of staple foods for the week. We ask that each homeroom accumulate its donations in the container provided. We'll check for overflowing containers periodically and replace them as needed. Manna House volunteers will call for our donations, which we'll store in the Field House Lobby, on Wednesday, November 26. Each grade level is being asked to contribute a specific category of staple food so that our donations address all of Manna
House's needs. Please encourage your children to be generous. Thanks for helping others.

Diversity Discussion continues...
We are planning a second discussion about diversity at Harford Day School. All are welcome to attend, even if you were unable to join us for the first discussion. We will meet on Tuesday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the new multi-purpose space. Our agenda will include prioritizing ideas that were generated during our first discussion and planning strategies to accomplish our goals. Following what we hope will be a lively discussion, we will have some social time. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring a favorite ethnic dish to share with other parents. Please e-mail Su Harris or LaFreda Smith if you can attend or with any questions. Don't miss this great opportunity to talk about ways to make our community even stronger.
